Hello fellow pilots!
I am new at St Paul Airlines and I can fly somewhat. Takeoffs, landings and navigating with gps on autopilot isn't a problem...in small planes. I am currently doing the lessons in the training section, currently doing TN8900A. I have done this one once already and find it really interesting that the plane can actually follow the glide slope(hope I said that right). The question I have in the lesson, it give you information for your radio setup...

MKB to "on"
Nav #1 to 111.5(ILS)
Nav #2 to 115.3(msp).
ADF to 385(LOM)
Transponder as required.

My questions are ...

What is MKB?

For the ILS, where are you getting the frequency from? I cannot find it in the fs flight planner. The map that has your destination has frequencies but none that match the ILS for Holman Field(my destination).

For the Nav #2...why do we use 115.3(msp)? Is (msp) Holman or Minneapolis(KMSP)?

I know what the ADF is but what is (LOM)?

Transponders identify your aircraft...is that assigned to you or do you create that? If so...how?

I said before when I joined that I will have plenty of questions...this is just the beginning!

I really do want to learn all aspects of flying an aircraft. I am reading a lot in the fs learning section. Flying using GPS is simple. Flying using VOR,ILS,Approach, etc is the real deal. You will be hearing from me quite a bit!

Thanks in advance for your replies and ANY recommendations. They will be greatly appreciated!

If you are flying VFR then set your transponder to 1200. Otherwise, if you are under an assigned FAA controller enroute, then set your transponder code to what they assigned to you.

I suggest Sporty's Pilot Shop for training material. Just take the courses just like you were learning to be a real pilot.

What is MKB? Marker Beacon Here's a link for information forum.flyawaysimulation.com/forum/topic/4392/mkb/

If the ILS approach worked as you said you must have the correct frequency. You can use a free program like Little Nav Map albar965.github.io/ to look up runway frequencies easily.

For the Nav #2...why do we use 115.3(msp)? Is (msp) Holman or Minneapolis(KMSP)?
115.3 is the VOR reference that allows you to track to that destination. You can fly VOR to VOR to navigate your plane to your destination.

I know what the ADF is but what is (LOM)? Locator outer marker additional info en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marker_beacon

Transponders identify your aircraft...is that assigned to you or do you create that? If so...how? SPA031 answered that one.

Keep up the training.... and have fun.

Hey Ed, nice to see someone else giving those training flights a try. When I first started flying them I didn't know much about navigation. I just jumped into the 747 and took it for a spin.

The more into the realism of it the more fun there was. I think it was about the 3rd training flight where you're on an instrument approach in the fog or rain (I think an NDB approach). Anyway - I followed the directions and sure enough - out of the blinding clouds suddenly appeared the flashing runway beacons guiding me straight along my current heading to the runway. I was hooked!

St. Paul Airlines is not a flight school for the real world. St. Paul Airlines does NOT provide training for real world pilots. If you are thinking of becoming a real pilot, then I suggest that you go to a flight school nearby and enroll at your local flight training facility.

edited by: SPA031, May 31, 2020 - 08:10 AM

I am in no way wanting to become a real pilot...I just want to become a virtual pilot! There is a lot to the fs that makes it realistic...it's what makes it fun and this is what it's all about.
