FSX Steam? was created by paul.kennedy
I have been becoming increasingly frustrated with FSX Boxed crashing on me for no apparent reason. Mostly, short flights (under 2hours) with a single engine, for example the Caraavan, seem to run ok, but as soon as I load a jet, FSX crashes within the hour. I have been reading about FSX Steam and that its supposed to be much more stable. It would cost me about $30 to get the FSX Steam edition. So here's what I'm wondering: Is the Steam edition that much better or more stable? Would it be worth my while getting? Be thankful for any opinions ...

Hey Paul,

Sorry about your issues with FSX. Right off - I'll say that I have no personal experience with FSXSE, but have some thoughts on the topic. First, I too was frustrated with the unexplained crashes with FSX - but they didn't seem to be as consistent as you describe - and not linked to a change in plane model.

I would suggest P3D - the simulator I moved to, but with a new FSX2020 simulator expected in the near future - I will personally hold off before changing or upgrading my simulator. I don't know how powerful the machine is that you're running things on - but that can be important for both performance and stability, in fact the early version of P3d wouldn't work on my system with 3- monitors because it took more juice than my system had, while FSX worked adequately with my computer.

Currently I've had two recent unexplained crashes on P3Dv4 while flying the long Earhart flights, although the crashes have occurred within the first couple of hours of flight. I haven't checked the Windows System Logs to try to identify the cause of the program crash - but the logs can often be very helpful in identifying what addon is causing FSX or P3D to crash.

Fortunately, I use FSUIPC registered version that has the auto-save option. While my sim crashes have been inconvenient, I was able to quickly recover by leaving SPAACARS running so it remembers my flight data up to the time of the crash, and then just restarting the simulator and loading the last auto-saved flight created by FSUIPC on regular intervals during flights. This restarts my flight very near to the time of the crash and SPAACARS automatically picked up where it left off and I've managed to complete these flights without additional crashes or problems - with SPAACARS successfully uploading my PIREP for the entire fliight. Also, these flights have been quite long (sometimes 5 to 7 hours) - the longest I've made in a long time.

edited by: jer029, Nov 18, 2019 - 08:20 AM

I, too, am surprised by my P3D V4.5 freezing during a flight. This is something new to me. I do use ActiveSky for P3D, ORBX scenery, and Ultimate Traffic Live, so the freeze could be a memory issue. Press CRL-ALT-DEL while running your simulation and look at your computer's memory usage. I do look in YouTube and Google to see what P3D settings are best recommended and found some very helpful information there.

The FSX2020 simulator scenery looks great, but I am happy with P3D for now. I have a lot invested in it.

Hoping not to hijack the subject -that's very interesting Robert, as I have almost the same setup - and I didn't have these freezes until I recently updated to 4.5. I'm beginning to believe that it's directly related to that install (and possibly a conflict with one of the addons we both have). I'll have to look into this a bit further the next time it happens.

I'm using an I7 processor with 8GB RAM and an NVIDIA 960 with 4GB RAM. I've been careful to buy only quality items. The PC I use for the flightsim is a dedicated system, which means, the only thing I run on it is the FSX. I do have FSrealWX registered, for weather and have only installed 6 or 7 further aircraft. I wouldn't have a problem registering FSUIPC if that would at least help me recover from a crash. I am curious however to know which logs to look at to see whether or not an addon is causing a crash. Can you give me a tip where to find those logs? P3D is a bit expensive for me at the moment, maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but I saw a price for $199 ?

Paul,

Most of us use the Academic Version of P3d that is priced competitively with FSX (the only different I believe is the "Academic" watermark in the upper-right corner - not a big deal).

Look under "Event Viewer" in your control panel or use the search area of your windows icon to find it, Then click on the Windows Logs and then the Application icon to see Application messages. You should be able to find the FSX crash logs listed there and the offending DLL that might lead to the identity of the addon causing conflict.
