Hi all,

Just wanted to let ye all know what i'm up to. I'm moving to Glasgow in about a months time to start a four year Music Performance degree. I'll be living in the centre of Glasgow which seems like a really nice city, so i'm really looking forward to that. And there's an awful lot of opportunities musically for me as well.

Thankfully i'll be able to keep up my involvement in SPA, yesterday i ordered a new laptop which will mean i can continue flying while away! :-D I got a very good deal on a Dell Studio laptop, specs are as followed...

Intel Pentium dual Core Processor T4200 (2.0GHz, 800MHz, 1MB cache)
4096MB 800MHz Dual channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x2048)
512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570
320GD (5.400rpm) SATA Hard Drive
15.6in Widescreen High Definition (1366x768) WLED with TrueLife

So lookin forward to seeing how well my FS9 will run on that! (since i already run it quite well at almost full settings on a less powerful machine) I know i could probably upgrade to FSX with specs like that but not sure if its worth the money, any thoughts on that?

edited by: tbone-guy, Aug 27, 2009 - 01:38 AM

Congratulations Cillian, that sounds really great. I haven't been there, but I'll bet you'll find Glasgow an exciting city in which to live. A career as a professional musician (I know a couple) isn't an easy thing, but it can be very rewarding.

I have a laptop on which I run FSX. It's a Dell with a Dual Core T7600 at 2.33 GHz and an NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GTX. It will often run FSX at 15-20 fps, BUT, if I set the scenery level above moderately low, or use a complex aircraft, it will sometimes start freezing on me or dropping down to 2-3 fps. I haven't been able to diagnose the problem for sure, but it looks like other programs (running in the background) steal CPU cycles and that does it. Running by itself, FSX can use >90% of the CPU cycles. I may have other problems I haven't detected, but my experience suggests that FSX may not run all that well on your machine. On the other hand, FS9 should be no problem.

Thanks guys,

Cant promise anything on the drinking front, from my experiences of the city so far it a lot cheaper then what i'm used to here in Ireland!

Thanks for the advice Mike, I think I probably will keep to FS9, I would prefer to be able to run that really well at high settings, rather then FSX badly at moderate settings.

thanks bob and chris!

Chris, i didnt realise you used be a music student. wat did you play/where did you study? I'm lucky in glasgow as i'l have about 5 professional perfoming groups including two symphony orchestras, an Opera, a ballet nd a chamber orchestra, and my teacher will be a former principal trombonist in one of those symphony orchestras. many of the teachers in the college are members of these orchestras nd all the venues are within about 10/15 minute walk of my accomodation so it shud be great!
