Well I'm setting up my new computer and can't get any sound to work using my headset. I have no speakers plugged in.
I am using Vista ultimate. Any help appreciated.

I am no Vista expert; I use XP. But, try these steps:
1. Plug your headset into the correct sound input/output jacks on your computer.
2. Turn on your computer.
3. Put your headset on your head.
4. Turn up the volume on your headset.
OR
5. Go to the control panel and change your sound output device to your headset and test it.

I had it made by a friend of a friend. I have briefly tested framerates. In FS9, with sliders up, around 70 to 80 fps, and in FSX with sliders back a tad, and flying Barry Blaisel's Q300, around 50 fps.
It has a E6850 Intel chip (core 2 duo 3 Ghz), 8800GTS video card (640mb), 4 gb memory, 2X 320gb hard drives and Samsuns 22" widescreen.
I checked sound device settings in the control panel and it tells me that no headphones are plugged in. Maybe as Bob says I need to plug them in before turning the computer on.
