Im still using FSX SE. It runs better for me than the boxed Retail FSX ever did. I don't run a ton of scenery, ORBX FTX Global and a few other things here and there. Fly mostly PMDG birds(the newer Carenado stuff is good as well).

Two barriers are stopping me from going to P3D:

1.) Rebuying my planes (significant outlay)
2.) Building a newer computer. I have a 1060 SSC but im running a bit older Xeon E3 1290 v2 on a Sabretooth z77 mobo, 16gb ram. Now this runs FSX SE just fine on a single monitor, 1920x1080 and just about anything else I care to play it has zero issues whatsoever....but I am guessing to get the same level of performance out of P3D I need to upgrade to a newer i5/i7/mobo/ram.

I'm glad you're happy here at SPA Scott, and your p3d pics helped convince me that I wanted that improved graphics. Like you - I find flight simming to be my primary hobby, so have sunk a lot of money into it. OOM crashes and the many other issues with FSX always had me swearing I'd unload it when the first reasonable replacement came along. Running 3 monitors as my main simulation screen takes its toll on system resources though, and earlier versions of P3D did worse than FSX did.

Like Nick said - the significant outlay already invested in fsx planes is painful to have buy again in P3D. Fortunately I've been able to get a number of them upgraded at no cost just like the FTX scenery. I believe most of the Carenado stuff will be made available to customers as will some of the Aerosoft planes, and the Dash-8 Q400. I've already managed to get Beech 1900D transferred from Carenado as well as the Twin Otter and the PBY Catalina. The Q-400 is still being worked on by the developer for release on v4 systems.

Nick, nice to know that FSX SE is an improvement over the boxed version - especially since the boxed version is difficult to find nowadays. Regarding the planes - I ended up with so many that I hardly ever flew many of them (and actually forgot how to fly a number of the more complex ones). I think I'll be a bit more selective (if I can control myself) when replacing aircraft in p3d v4, perhaps by selecting only the handful of different types (bush, turbo prop, and jet) that I fly most often. I kind of miss the trusty Beaver though and hope that will be available in v4. Like I said though - I'll keep my fsx up and running for some time so that I can access all those old treasures in I need or want to - at least until I no longer find myself using it.

If it works and you're happy why mess with it. Sticking with FSX is alright too. I guess my point would be (as in my case) if you know you're eventually going to upgrade - the longer one waits the more expensive it might get if the addon developers discontinue offering conversions for free or reduced upgrade costs.

I can certainly see it getting more expensive as more and more stuff comes out. I honestly don't have a want for any more aircraft at this time and dont plan on spending any more money on the sim outside maybe Airhauler 2, and I am probably going to start putting some funds back for a build next year which should hopefully make me p3d ready at which time I will swtich i think, it will be painful to see the JS41 go though :(

Thanks Scott,

I'll have to consider that if Aerosoft doesn't decide to bring their Beaver to the v4 line. It currently is not on their compatibility list, but they state it isn't comprehensive. I can likely pick it up for a reduced price as I own the current Aerosoft version whereas I'd have to pay full price for the Milviz version - but it's nice to know that you think it's a good model.
