Test Flight with Misty Moorings

Ok...so I finally gave this a bit of a test run...and, although I had some issues that took time to figure out (I think I have them figured out), I've really enjoyed my first flight (Dispatch001 under the "here to there" section).

Check out the pictures I posted. This flight - Misty's Place to Wilson River Lodge with a number of remote stops along the way, was as much fun as discovering Orbx for the first time.

First things first though...I spent most of one day downloading and installing things and testing things out. First thing I did after installing the scenery for the this first Dispatch, was start up my simulator (fsx) at the starting point - Misty's Place. I already had the Orbx stuff - so I figured I was ready to go. Nope...I noticed right away there were floating smoke stacks with smoke coming out but no building under them.

Reading further - I noted that I had to load about 3 libraries that were also required. The instructions were good and I installed these easily enough, including the scenery tester that allowed me to test my setup at one spot - making sure the buildings all appeared as they did in the picture.

Now with all the files installed I thought I was ready to go, but as soon as I left the ground at Misty's Place my FPS went slow and crazy and my simulator was reduced to a series of still photographs.

I spent the rest of the day yesterday trying to find the culprit...and part of today. I thought I found it yesterday - but the problems started again today. So I did more adjusting - and again think I might have found the issue for me.

Off the top it appears to be one of the sound bgl files for Nina's (there appeared to be two - and I disabled the one called "ninas_sound_FSX.bgl". This returned some of the sound - birds and such, but not the music, etc. I'll have to see if the fps lag returns - as it did yesterday when I thought it was some other fix.

Once disabling (renaming) that file I successfully completed the whole rest of the Dispatch without a single problem. Considering the complexity (and that I have my system maxed out with 3 large screens using Nvidia Surround), the problems were minimal and likely specific to my system setup.

At any rate, I must say that I really, really enjoyed that flight, and will have to re-fly it (for my SPA PIREP this time), now that I know the lay of the land and can probably navigate my way around a bit easier.

Perhaps this post and my pictures might interest a few other pilots. Perhaps we'll have to do this as a multiplayer flight sometime. :-)

I've added a sample 5-min video from Misty Moorings that I made so SPA pilots can see the quality of work they've done there. Check out the link in Training Videos.

Yesterday I spent more time fiddling with the Nina's sound issue. I've narrowed the sound issue down further to the "nina's bar music.fx" file. You can either disable this by renaming - then reactivate the nina's bgl file and get the party voices without fps hit.

Another option is to copy the contents from mistys bar music file and paste into the nina's bar music file. Then you get both music and party voices without fps hit. This doesn't work perfect like at Mistys - as it has a strange echo effect that I believe is an issue in the bgl file I haven't fiddled with yet. This sound distortion worsens as you get closer - but at least without the fps hit. This is the option I've settled with for now.

I've also made several trips down the Wilson River Run with various aircraft - and one of Misty's free boat addons. I prefer to stick with planes for now - and found the Quest Kodiak to be my plane of choice for the Misty flights. It's faster and more powerful than the Beaver - and (unlike the Aerosoft Twin Otter) - both those planes have the water rudders to extend (ctrl-w), that allows steering). I'm talking about the amphibian models here - with the landing gear too. This comes in handy when you get too close to docks or land scenery and get stuck there. This causes my simulator to get quite excited and my plane bounces up and down and makes lots of noise - sometimes spinning like in a tornado. At any rate, by plopping down the landing gear at this point, it's generally possible to crawl back to the water position and continue on your route. This is also true with the river run - where you can easily miss a sharp turn.

While I'm more into flying than river cruising - I've been drawn back to the river run several times because the graphics are so visually stunning from that perspective - including the nice little scenery sets added along the way by the RTMM folks. This is great fun at dusk as the setting sun colors the sky various shades of red and orange. Getting back to Mistys in the dark can be some white-knuckle flying though ;-) Perhaps a multiplayer flight including the river run is in the future.

Nice video jr. I too took awhile to work through the file downloads (I didn't try the sound files), but I enjoyed my first flight from PAKT to Misty's Place. I particularly enjoyed the flock of seagulls I encountered on downwind. See the pictures in the Forum.

Thanks Yoland - but this is actually a known issue with the Nina's sound pack according to their forum. My latest communication with them leads me to believe that they have given up on some of the sound stuff because it's too prone to problems. I really like it - and that has encouraged me to work a bit on this.

Even when I change my system to single screen it still would choke on Nina's sound. My intel i7 990x CPU and NVIDIA GTX 590 Graphics card with 4095 graphics memory would always handle the most extreme FSX stuff at this setting - including anything that my ActiveSky 2012 weather could throw at it.

Since shutting down this one sound effect fixes fps issue instantly - I think it's safe to say that my system's issue is this sound file problem noted by other users on Misty's forum and not a cloud-draw issue.

Also - I switched back to FSX from P3D when I couldn't get it to play nice with my 3 screen-NVIDIA Surround setup. Too bad - because I really like the pics you've posted using P3D.

These systems are still so finicky, it seems that one person's solution is not always everyone's solution, so I guess the more options one has - the better the possibility a solution will be found. :-)

edited by: jer029, Sep 14, 2014 - 10:42 AM

Agreed Mike - I like the way they fly around the lighthouse there - and again - the sound effects are a wonderful touch there too. In fact - it seems they have the gulls at a lot of their scenery locations - and I always know when I'm getting close to one of them because I can start hearing the gulls. :-)
