Gents,

From the Training Department, I bring you a challenge:

Fly into KMWH from any where in any aircraft, and perform an NDB RWY 32R approach in low (3-5 miles) vis and low (800 ft agl) ceiling.

Ricardo,
Thanks for replying.
You pretty much got it my friend. The ^ symbol next to the LOM fix indicates there is a hill that is 1357' MSL.
Looking forward to your flight.
I will fly this challenge this Friday.

Cheers,
Naresh

First try on a company 767, flight from CYYJ.

As you can see I had to adjust my final approach heading once the runway was visible. I also crossed the 10NM perimeter by a little. I will try again and let you all know.

Nice job Naresh! I had a preliminary pass at this the other night in my Piper Seminole. It wasn't very pretty. That made it very clear that you need a good ADF to make this work. The ADF in my Seminole is hard to read and can't be brought up without losing sight of everything else. So, I'll have to try again with one of my better IFR aircraft. Have you tried flying these approaches without using the autopilot? That makes it really tough.

Hi Mike,

I flew this using AP. I will try without AP next time. :D

Naresh,

OK, I gave it a shot using my trusty Money M20J. I don't think it is quite as neat as yours. The M20J has no RMI, so I was reduced to tracking the NDB using the ADF, aka RBI. This proves to be kind of unintuitive for me, particularly outbound the NDB. Nonetheless, I managed to break out within sight of the threshold and make a half decent landing. I had no crosswind and did use the AP, so it could have been a lot tougher. On the other hand, I made no use of the GPS, of the colocated VOR or of the ILS/DME; I navigated strictly on the NDB itself. The plot and some pics of the flight are in "More of Mike's Miscues."
