How to set up a real flight plan (USA only):
This works well if you are using either FSC 8.2(Flightsim commander) or FSBuild. These allow you to Copy & Paste the route.
First you decide what your departure and destination will be, and possibly the type aircraft you wish to fly.
Then you go to:> flightaware.com/ and click on “Don’t know the flight number? (found just under the > Track Commercial Flight button – left side).
This brings up a window with a Origin & Destination box. You type in your choices and select “Find Flights”.
This should bring up a list of recent airline flights between your selected points. On the far right you will find the type aircraft used (or proposed) for this flight.
Pick your flight and then click on the IDENT (flight number) to bring up a history list of this flight number. Those flown show it’s route and altitude used.
Pick one by clicking on the DATE.
To the right under Duration it will show if the flight has been flown yet.
When you pick one it will show type Aircraft used/Route/Time/Altitude.
IF you have FSC 8.2 or FSBuild you can copy and paste the route into your program and build an exact copy of the route used and then put it into your FMS and fly it…even with the same altitude.
If you use real wx (unless it has changed a lot since the real departure time, it should all work. If not, then insert your own wx into MSFS.
I just flew AAL 2020 from KDFW to KATL in a MD-82.
Have FUN!
NOTE: Under STATUS = Scheduled means not flown yet/thus no visible track on map. Shows Route proposed, but no altitude.
Also shows En Route and Arrived. Shows route and altitude actually flown.

Jerrry,
I'm glad you posted this. I've been using Flightaware to get "real" IFR routes for quite awhile and I recommend it in the current version of the "First Flight Tutorial" that I send out to new pilots. However, I haven't figured out how to paste the route into FSC82. How do you do that?

Mike:
The way to copy the route into FSC is:
1. Open the route box
2. Click on Flight Plan
3. Then click on Route String
* That will open a field at the bottom of the Route box. Then just Paste the route into that area and hit OK (to the right of that field).
You can use the SIDS/STARS function of FSC to add those to the route.
Visually check the route to make sure it is what you want.

I'm not sure if it will copy & paste to FSNav.
But, you can always enter the entire route into FSNav, or even MSFS planner.
Some of the routes only have a few fixes.
The tough part now days is finding the SIDS & STARS within your program. You may need to add all those fixes manually from paper charts.

Thanks Jerry, I just figured out how to follow your instructions. I had never seen that line labeled "route string" under the "Flight Plan" menu before; that's the key.

Please dont try this on a translantic flight or you will end up thousand of miles from were you should be.
It is great as jerry says for north america only.
Got a route last night to fly from KLAX to KMSP
Thanks Jerry <br /><br /><!-- editby --><br /><br /><em>edited by: daveraine, Apr 08, 2008 - 01:53 PM</em><!-- end editby -->
