I'm not quite sure what you meant by using the program on vatsim. If you use Squawkbox, that is suffic for vatsim, but only for vatsim.
Have you seen this little basic training on ATC?

Jerry, I did not know about the new free ATC program. That sounds like a cool thing to do some research on.

Naresh is right; Radar Contact is really good, but it is payware. It's very flexible and realistic and has a good manual. The only weak aspect is taxi instructions. Some folks manage to use the "native" MSFS for this aspect and Radar Contact for the rest, but I haven't mastered that yet.
