Looks like SPA 711 is going to be sidelined for at least a little while. My P3D3v4.5 became very unstable two days ago after my computer did a reboot after a power surge in our neighborhood. As luck would have it, I was doing the HotFix update at the time and when I got the computer rebooted P3D was totally screwed up. Won't go into great detail, but despite my attempts to repair the the Client and put ORBX back together again using tried and true methods, NO Joy.
Wound up having to do a clean reinstall of P3D and of course lost all of the scenery and A/C installations. Got the base P3Dv4.5 install done and soon discovered that FSUIPC would not work nor successfully reinstall. Finally got that working and reluctantly set out to reinstall all my A/C, Utilities and Scenery. That lasted about two hours and i realized that I might as well bite the bullet and purchase P3Dv5 and HorFix and kill two birds with one stone.
From what I've seen and read about in FORUMS the effort will be worth it . ORBX stuff looks superb and REX just confirmed that their WX engine and beautiful graphics will be available for version 5 very shortly. I'm not a fan of the True Sky in P3d and no real-time WX . The posts I've seen of True Sky scenarios look over saturated and very unrealistic. Guess most of the posters never looked out the window of an airliner cruising at FL360 and think that every cloud should be bright and usually orange.
I'm going to take my time and clean up excess and/or unused flight sim stuff and be sure everything works well. Should take me at least a week.Hope to back in the SPA skies on about May20.
Wish me luck. Although I realize that the whole process is computerized, anything can go wrong.........

Hey Smitty,
Very sorry to hear about your problems. We missed you on yesterday's multiplayer flight - but this certainly explains why you've been missing around here at SPA. I'm sure you'll get things up and running soon enough. Please let us know how things go with P3Dv5 - compatibility, etc. as many pilots will be making that switch in the near future. Several of us were discussing the latest update for v5 that apparently required a complete reinstall of the program. These are the things that make me think I'll wait a bit longer till some of the bigger bugs are worked out.

Hi John,
As I said, I tried all of the "tricks" to pull off a new install without a total reinstall but everything I tried just brought up a new and even more interesting problem. Kind of like chasing your tail. The last straw was when FSUIUPC stopped working and you couldn't even save a flight plan or hit your Gear button only to have the engine cut out. Normally that wouldn't bother me but it seems like Pete Dawson is having to push out more changes in FSUIPC to address all of these changes in 4.5 and now version 5. It's getting a bit confusing!
Wound up with so much free space on my drives that I might even take a shot at X-Plane when everything stabilizes. Since all of these major changes in flight sims have occurred nearly all at once I think I'll try the Academic version on P3D this time. If you weren't a student when this stuff started you certainly are now. We've been have been presented with a rather long learning curve to conquer just to make this stuff work.

My sympathies. Been there myself.
While I was at it again installing P3dV5 this time, I discovered that I was short of disk space on my C: drive. So, I had to order a 2TB SSD and move everything over to it and make it my boot drive. Lots of space now!
Another thing: After installing ORBX scenery, I discovered that putting the scenery into the P3dV5 folder might be the best option for performance. Is this true? Don't know yet, but the other option did not work for me. Now, My main problem is that my ORBX Great Britain scenery is all blurry and it takes too long to load a flight simulation in England. When I load a flight in the USA, the scenery looks great and loads a lot faster.
Maybe I need to upgrade my computer too. I guess there are a lot of hobbies other than this that are much more expensive.

edited by: SPA031, May 18, 2020 - 07:30 PM
