Philippe's version of Amelia Around The World Tour

John and I both started the Amelia Earhart Around The World Tour.

John is a purist and flies the Lockheed Electra. He flies from VOR to VOR, uses NBD, dead reckoning and any other navigational aids that were available to Amelia and Fred Noonan. Also, John flies in real-time and real weather. Let me be the first to applaud and recognize his effort. Quite a feat!

On the other hand, I am a rebel and I am posting this thread for those of you who want to do the 'round-the-world tour but are intimidated by how high John has set the bar.

First off, I decided not to buy the Electra (seriously, how many add-ons one can buy before it is just too crazy?). Instead, I am using the FSX default DC-3 which is very similar to the Electra and I changed the call sign to SPA700 for the occasion.

So the first flight is from Oakland, CA to Burbank, CA. I took off from KOAK, destination KBUR, filled with plenty of good intentions, in the footsteps of John. I started heading South, reached 5,000 feet, leveled off and then noticed that at 150 MPH I was barely moving. I settled into my seat and waited and waited, and waited. Then, I realized that at that rate I would have to live to be 90 years old to finish this. I could literally feel myself getting older by the minute with the scenery below going by at a glacial pace.

Also, I have to admit that when I first started with Flight Simulation there was no GPS and I was forced to learn to navigate the old fashion way but I am starting to forget things. However, I have flown using the GPS for a long time and I love it. Don't get me wrong, I am not that bright and when things get hairy I can still manage to get lost from time to time even with the GPS.

That's when I decided on a couple of changes that would make it possible for me to make this journey. First off I will be using the GPS from now on and I will accelerate the sim. I imposed only two restrictions to myself. I will only accelerate the sim 25 miles after departure and stop it 25 miles from the destination. I also communicate, as always, with air traffic control in and out of airports.

So there you have it. Whether you fly like in 1937 or 2019, fast or slow, by the book or by your own rules, always remember, flight simulation is supposed to be fun, so have fun YOUR way!

edited by: philippe721, Nov 03, 2019 - 08:49 PM

Hah Philippe, I won't fault you for your choice of plane or use of GPS. I will also excuse your use of sim rate acceleration, but I would suggest pilots refrain from this, as it makes the journey end too soon - and you miss the appreciation of what that actual flight was like for Amelia. Still, I did the same on my final assigned flights to Tokyo. I didn't want to sit at my simulator all day long, or let it fly unattended - wearing on my computer for no good reason. So, to each their own on this one. Also - Philippe already did a version of the Earhart flight on his own and was one of the pilots who inquired about it as an "official flight", so I can't fault him for expediting things at the most boring parts of this tour.

As for me, yes...I'll continue flying the Electra 10, but I didn't have to buy a version of it. For those of us flying P3D, Lockheed gives us this wonderful plane as a default aircraft with their simulator.

So, thanks to Philippe for helping inspire this Earhart tour, and for taking another run at it for our "official" version of it. I hope that he - and any other pilot has as much enjoyment flying it as I'm having - regardless of what they fly it with or how they fly it.

Happy flying is the rule here at SPA,

John

Starting the Amelia Earhart Around the world Tour

After reading John`s and Philippe721 post, l `ve decided to do the tour also. l`ve spend 5 hours making an updated version and to keep all the original waypoints on the flight plan, it`s time to put it through the test. In keeping things original, l found an the Electra 10-E with
the same registration number (NR16020) online. The R in the number means they are restricted to only 2 passengers for this tour. But this was frequently violated. Hopefully, l`ll be able to match her speed of 177 miles per hour.
Now since it`s not a payware, l`m hoping that l can adjust the fuel settings for some of those long legs of the flight, which l did. They modified her plane by adding, 6 extra fuel tanks to her wings and 6 extra tanks in the fuselage for a total of 1200 gallons. that` about 7,200 lbs.
Of course, l will only use the necessary amount of fuel to do one leg at the time for this tour. l will keep a record of how much fuel l use for each leg flying at around 14,000 and 15,000'.

The Cockpit is similar but newer. l don`t have the luxury of a navigator with me so, l have a GPS to guide me. That`s all l need. Of course, l will be at the mercy of mother nature, in terms of using real weather all through the flight. l did a few test with it, l anticipate it could be
a bumpy ride in some area of the flight.

All l can say is, good luck to all who, are or will take the challenge and follow Amelia Earhart flight path around the world.

439-Larry
