The above LINK will show you a chart that displays the route for the IFR flight.

SPA Training Department IFR Practice

I know most of you wing-nuts out there in SPA land know this IFR stuff already, but many of you do not. This flight is geared for the latter, yet is a good refresher for all.
Please fly it…it is fun when it all comes together as it should in the real world. Fly it more than once if you wish to correct mistakes and hone your skills to a professional level.

*NOTE: The logging of double flight time is authorized for this trip (up to three times).

ROUTE: KAST..AST.V112.PITER.V165.UBG..MCCOY..KSLE
ALTITUDE: 7000 FEET

SETUP: WIND SET TO: 120° AT 10
CLOUDS SET TO: 1000’ OVERCAST (8X8 COVERAGE) TOPS at 7000 feet.
VISIBILITY: 2sm R- (light rain)

*NOTES:
• You will depart ASTORIA on RWY 13 and follow the “Astoria One Departure (obstacle)” procedure.

• You will land at SALEM using the LOC BC approach to RWY 13 via the TRANSITION route from over UBG VOR.

• You may use any airplane you are comfortable with. I suggest something slow so you can read and plan ahead as you fly along. I used a Mooney. A good AUTOPILOT is a must for single pilot IFR.

• GO TO: skyvector.com to get all the necessary charts for this flight.

o CHART # 1 = ENROUTE L-1
 Mouse over the CHART (globe) symbol at the top of the page…a map selection list will open. Select the NW most chart with your mouse. FIND ASTORIA. This is a SECTIONAL chart. It shows both terrain and Low Airways. Move to the right and click on “ENROUTE L-1”. This will open the IFR LOW chart of the same area…ASTORIA, Oregon. (This is a copy of the real chart that a pilot would use for this IFR flight.)
 DRAG the map TO SCROLL and ZOOM with the command bar at the lower right of the page.
 Locate your route: AST.V112.PITER.V165 (TURNING SOUTH) TO UBG VOR. SALEM is just south of UBG VOR about 29 nm. This is your landing field.
 PRINT a copy of the chart between ASTORIA and SALEM in whatever scale you need for ease of reading for navigation (1 or 2 pages). (a screenshot program may make this easier. Then crop to desired size and print.)
o CHART # 2 & 3 = ASTORIA ONE DEPARTURE & LOC BC RWY 13 (SALEM)
 Now go back up to the top left of the page and click on the AIRPORT symbol. This will give you a list of USA States. Find and select OREGON.
 Find ASTORIA REGIONAL (AST). Select and scroll down to the airport charts (near bottom) and select and PRINT: ASTORIA ONE (obstacle).
 Now go back to the LIST of OREGON AIRPORTS and select SALEM MCNARY FIELD. PRINT the LOC BC RWY 13 approach plate.

*NOTE: USE ONLY YOUR PRINTED CHARTS FOR NAVIGATION. Do NOT use GPS or any Flight Planning tool – including the one built into MSFS.

***** More to follow soon. (get the charts, and get prepared!)

Thanks Ken....

Actually, I have not posted the flight itself yet. I'm still writing it. It will be finished soon. :-?

The above is just the ref to obtain the charts you'll need for the flight. :-D

The lesson is rather wordy, when you get it, but I wrote it for our people without much IFR knowledge. Please extract whatever each of you may need in order to fly the trip. ;-)

It is a FUN trip. I hope many of you SPA wing-nuts to give it a shot. You may even learn something.
