S.P.A. Commuter Captain Line Check:

To demonstrate your proficiency in:

  • VOR HOLDING *
  • VOR APPROACH *
  • ALTITUDE CROSSING RESTRICTION
  • SPEED CONTROL
  • CALCULATING DESCENT RATE FOR NON-PRECISION APPROACH

* See Navigation listed under Ground School. (.pdf file)

  1. Print the approach plate for the TLH VOR RWY 18 (Tallahassee, Florida); found by going to: SPA web site/pilot lounge/approach plates USA.
  2. Complete "Training Flight in BE-1900" (except substitute the ATR-72) as many times as needed to feel comfortable in your new aircraft.
  3. The SPA Company ATR-72 has a check-list with it - select "F10" Key.

ROUTE OF FLIGHT:

ATL (VOR=116.9) TO PZD (VOR=116.1) TO SZW (VOR=117.5) TO TLH Airport

Fly the 178R outbound from ATL until 60 miles South, then proceed direct to PZD, then direct to SZW (Seminole VOR > serving the TLH airport (Tallahassee, FL.)

ALTITUDE:

Climb to 15,000 feet.

THEN: Cross 5 DME North of SZW VOR at 3000 feet

After one circuit in the holding pattern, descend to 2000 feet)

HOLDING:

HOLD North of the SZW Vortac on the 353° Radial ; Right Turns; 10 DME legs @ 3000 feet

HINTS:

  • Have your speed back to holding speed (200 kts) before you reach the SZW VOR.
  • Have your Nav # 1 set to SZW with 173° set for the INBOUND COURSE ( after you turn back toward the station)
  • Set Nav # 2 to SZW also > the RMI will point to the station helping you remain oriented (be sure to "select" Nav #2)

The entry will be DIRECT > simply turn outbound after passing the VOR to a heading of 350°. When the DME reads "10", then turn right to a heading of about 160° and watch the movement of the CDI > capture & center it. (watch your airspeed in the turns) After passing the VOR the second time, descend to 2000 feet. This is your "initial approach altitude."

APPROACH:

The VOR RWY 18 approach to the TLH Airport is: the SZW 173° Radial outbound from the VOR.

  • When inbound to the VOR & established on the 353° Radial (backside of the 173 - set in) Lower flaps to 8° and slow to 160 kts. Maintain 2000 feet until passing the VOR.
  • Crossing the VOR , lower the Landing gear & lower flaps to 15°.
    • The Airport elevation is: 82 feet
    • Your Minimum descent height is : 540 feet – if fixing WAPIM intersection (SZW 6.7 DME).  Altitude at WAPIM is 760.
    • DME distance from the VOR to the Runway is 8.7 miles ( what is your rate of descent?)
  • Figure your descent rate from 2000 feet to the airport elevation of 82 feet in 8.7 miles.
  • Your MDA is 540 feet...if you don't "break out" before then, then you must level at 540 feet until you can see the end of the runway, and are in a position to make a normal landing.
  • Your missed approach point is the 173° radial (SZW VOR) @ 8.7 miles
  • Hint: Set the ADF freq. > 379 > it is about 5 miles on the other side of the airport. This is your missed approach point ...& it points toward the airport.

Welcome To Tallahassee!
