Plane Selection and Fuel Considerations
We have recreated Ameila Earhart's Round-the-World flight for your enjoyment. Note - some of the legs of this flight are very long and exceed the normal fuel capacity of
the Lockheed Electra 10E, the original plane used. You will have to make adjustments to your plane's configuration file or use a different plane (we allow that here). Earhart's
plane was modified to hold 1,151 gallons of fuel.
Scenery Addons
Depending on your simulator's scenery setup, you will still likely need one of our three available downloads for Howland Island - The fateful stop that Earhart couldn't find before
running out of fuel and being lost to history in a mystery that still endures today.
If you are running FSX/P3D with default scenery (no scenery addons that change the mesh and default landclass), then you will want to use our howland_default.zip scenery. Default
FSX/P3d has an island in the wrong place, shape and no landing area. Our scenery removes that island and places one in the correct position with a landing strip and other eye
candy. Our island is a bit too narrow and curved than the actual island, but it will serve the purpose here.
If you're running FSX/P3D with FTX Global/Vector scenery enhancement addon, then you will want version howlandftx.zip. FTX Global/Vector provides the correct island in the
correct position, but it offers only jungle and no airfield. Our scenery uses this their island, but provides a runway and other eye candy.
Both scenery addons offer an approximately 4000-foot runway runnnig north-south (36/18). Both addons also provide the Coast Guard Cutter Itasca offshore of the Island to offer
navigational assistance. Since we cannot simulate radio transmissions from the Itasca to hone in on as was intended back in 1937, here we substitute an NDB aboard the Itasca to
assist pilots in navigating to the island. The NDB has a 100-mile radius on frequency 236.0, so set your ADF receiver to that frequency when leaving Lae, and if you can dead-reckon
your way to within 100 miles of Howland Island, the NDB on Itasca should guide you to the island.
If you're using MSFS-FS2020, you will need the zipfile jrogers-airport-hwpa-howland-island.zip. This zip file contains two folders needed to fly the Howland Island Leg of the Ameila Earhart Round the World Tour in MSFS-FS2020:
Both folders need to be placed into your Community Folder for MSFS/FS2020. Note that the airport code for this scenery is HWPA, and that the Frequency for the ADF (NDB) is different than for FSX/P3d. Also, this NDB only had a range of 75NM, so
if you're too far out of range you'll miss the island and end up swimming with Ameila. I was only able to hit it the first time and the second two attempts I missed. Good luck!
